The Davis Building dates from 1926. Used first as the Biltmore Grade School, and then, for Manatee High School. It has an auditorium in the back that was added in 1933. Most graduates want to see their treasured edifice remain standing. And that can be accomplished out of the four options - but in a new way.
The $39 million option should be rejected out of hand as simply too expensive to place on already-overburdened taxpayers. That would certainly spark outrage.
The middle-ground options - $22.4 million and $20 million - both involve more renovations. We've already been down that road 18 times. Isn't it time to start anew?
While the least expensive option, at $19.2 million, involves the destruction of the Davis Building, the new construction should please alumni.
The replacement building will look just like the 1926 original.
Only a bit bigger to accommodate larger classrooms.
